Walk...to live

Keene State College holds first annual leukemia walk and run

Many view the act of running or walking a track as monotonous and dry but Keene State College students proved otherwise on a sunny Saturday afternoon. At the Joyce Athletic fields on campus, many broke a sweat to raise money to perpetuate research and treatment for those who have battled leukemia.

Gambling

The odds of an addict

Local’s story proves gambling is much more than a game for some

Gamblers can temporarily live in a fantasy world of riches with only a dollar and a dream. However, some dreams don’t come true and a gambling addict’s fantasies can turn into delusions. In the gambling world, the odds are always in favor of the house.

Relay for Life

A walk to remember

Motivated student brings Relay for Life to Keene State for the first time

Someone who knows how to make the best out of every situation is Keene State College freshman Rebecca Lazinsk. In her first month at KSC, Lazinsk started making contacts and coordinating to bring a Relay for Life event to KSC for the first time.

Turning tables

KSC product design major creates beruit tables for friends and family

Some Keene State College students may place their red solo cups on plastic, cardboard or wooden tables to play the infamous game of beer pong, better known in the region as beruit. While the name of the game has always been a subject of debate at KSC, most students don’t pay much attention to the table they play on.

RHO 1

The building block of Res. Life

Dedicated Residence Hall Organization members awarded for their hard work

California is calling to an unsung Keene State College student organization and its staff advisor for materializing a lot of something from almost nothing. The Residential Housing Organization (RHO) at KSC will receive two major awards at an annual conference held at the University of San Diego on June 21.

Transforming the curriculum, changing lives

KSC provost fascinated with new media

Originally from New Orleans, he spends more than 40 hours a week dedicated to his work, is fascinated with mass media and tweets his daily thoughts. Emile Netzhammer, Provost of Keene State College and vice president of academic affairs, is an accomplished worker whose job entails more than students may know.

Twitter

Twitter is blowing up both on and off KSC campus

Over the past three years, the noun and verb tweet has acquired a new meaning. In addition to the voice of a bird, a tweet is a virtual post or update on the popular social network site called Twitter. Twitter is a modern information network connecting curious people from around the world.

Grand opening set in time for Class of 2010’s reception

Construction is finishing up, staff has moved into their new offices and a date has been set for the grand opening of the new Keene State College Alumni center. Director of Alumni and Parent Relations, Patty Farmer said the process went well.

Neighbor

Lrve thy neighbrr

The Good Book bids its followers to “Love thy neighbor,” but what does this age-old statute entail and how does it hold up against the often colorful lifestyle of a college student? Moving into off-campus housing is yet another step young adults often take during their latter college years.

Cheater

Cheating your way through college

Consequences have not stopped some Keene students from being academically dishonest

As students, specifically college students, it is a normality to get up, go to class, get school work done in a timely manner and still have enough time to experience the “college life” that creates those long-lasting memories.

In a Nut Shell

I am not a shopper, at least not by normal standards.

In a Nutshell

am not a shopper, at least not by normal standards. I shudder at the thought of going shopping for clothes or other relatively meaningless items.  Don’t even get me started about malls and their artificially-created environments, specifically designed to inspire people to buy, buy, buy.

Leavening essential in the cookie world

In a Nutshell

What smells like home? What scent makes you sigh and say “I’m home” after a deep inhale? I suppose this is a purely hypothetical question because, in reality, there are several things that come to my mind.

The smell of a warm breakfast cooking

There is only one thing that gets a person out of bed in the morning faster than an alarm clock.
It is the smell of a warm breakfast cooking.
What is the truly great thing about breakfast? That is an easy one; it is the sheer variety of food possibilities. What other meal do we have where it is acceptable and typical to have fruit, vegetables, meat, bread, pastries, dairy products, grains and eggs all on one plate?

Something to snack on

They are evil, manipulative, deceptive and my inexplicable attachment to them bites me in the butt every single time. And yet, I keep going back. For some, snacking is just something to pass the time, but for me, it’s an art form. First the good news: snacking isn’t a bad thing. As a matter of fact, it can sometimes play an integral role in weight loss. According to the Mayo Clinic, a well planned weight loss plan can actually include healthy snacks as a means of holding back the hunger between meals.

Legumes that are packing many proteins

Lately, conversations with my friends have been ‘humm’ing with one surprising topic. Hummus.
It is perhaps one of the most esthetically unappealing foods there is, hands down.
A bowl of hummus appears to be the unique combination of regurgitated baby food and something Fido would leave behind.

The benefits of trying anything at least once

If there was one thing my kindergarten teacher taught me that seems to have stuck over the years, it’s “no thank you helpings.”
Mrs. Gravel always insisted we take a bite-sized portion of whatever food was being offered, whether we actually liked it or not.  I never would have tried such delicacies as green bean casserole or mac n’ cheese from scratch had it not been for this sampling method.

Confessions of a coffee connoisseur

In A Nutshell

My name is Eliza Stinneford and I am an addict. My drug of choice? Coffee. It’s a beverage that’s always there for me when I need comfort or a pick-me-up. I need it like I need sleep, although sometimes it even takes the place of this necessity.

The Cigarette Afterwards

April 15th

The Cigarette Afterwards

I recently competed in a dodgeball tournament hosted by the Big Brothers Big Sisters club. I won’t lie, I was much more excited about creating the team uniforms than picking up a ball and throwing it at someone. I got out my puffy paints, went to town and the shirts were fabulous.

The Cigarette Afterwards

I used to work at a grocery store and one of my responsibilities was to empty the scratch ticket machine each night.

April 1st

I was on Facebook, big surprise, when I discovered one of my close friends would be coming to Keene this weekend.

March 4th

I recently experienced a night and morning from hell.

I should have known it was coming since I’d been doing pretty well recently. When bad things hit me, they come in groups. No single bad thing can happen to me without another bad thing following closely in its footsteps.

March 11th

Being a senior, I’ve obviously toyed with the idea of getting a job after college. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve definitely got a spot waiting for me behind the cash register at Market Basket, but I’ve also given some thought to a career change. I have therefore submitted resumes to several employers.

Lauren Danie

Let me make a list of things I can’t afford: Coach purses, an iPhone, food (sometimes), field trips, car payments, food for my hamster Henry, you get the gist. After reading a column by Brian Anderson, I have come to realize that I, as well as he, cannot afford Red Sox tickets. Thank you Brian for adding to my extensive list. This low light in my financial outlook has not, however, stopped me from watching my beloved Sox.
