As the housing shortage on campus reaches record numbers, a new solution has been brought forth that Residential Life and Habitat for Humanity say will “make a huge difference in the large number of students without rooms.”
As of next year, non-senior students who have been waitlisted or did not receive a room, will be able to pitch small canvas tents in the Fiske Quad. This will ensure shelter from low winds, light rain, toads and moderatly cold weather. A desk attendant will also be present after 4 p.m. at a wooden table on the grass of Appian Way to ensure only dorm-less students have access to this area.
No guest passes will be available on the weekends. Many essential utilities have also been covered. Because of this generous addition, the morning routine of these students will not be hindered, because for bathing and bathroom needs, the Ashuelot River is available. An ID is also required to use these facilities.
The river will also be used for laundry, which will cost $1.25 for each wash load and $1.75 for an hour on the drying line. Also, in place of a meal plan, these students will be supplied with squirrel traps and a basic flint and tinder kit.
