Tensions rose at the Student Assembly meeting Tuesday night during discussions about government by-laws. A proposal by Student Body Vice-President Anna Cerilli for a revision of Student Government by-laws was tabled until next week following arguments about the proposal.
“When Student Government first decided to buy a copier the Vice-President at the time said he would take care of it,” Cerilli said. “So by extension it just got put into the by-laws as the Vice-President’s job.”
Cerilli argued that the job would be better suited for the technology sub-committee suggesting the Vice President had other responsibilities.
Chair of the technology sub-committee Brendon McCarthy said that the argument wasn’t a valid excuse for the transfer of responsibility. McCarthy said changing the responsibility of the copier would waste time this late into the semester.
Cerilli said that the over burden of responsibilities was not the main concern for the change, but rather the responsibility belonged more appropriately to the technology sub-committee.
“It’s a technological responsibility to run the copier,” Cerilli said.
McCarthy said that the responsibility was written in the by-laws and a change was unproductive this far in the semester.
Student Government Advisor Paul Striffolino suggested that a possible outside party could be in charge of the copier. The discussion was eventually tabled for next week, but Cerrilli got in the last word during her Vice-President report later at the meeting.
“I can still hold down the fort even with my added responsibility,” Cerilli said.
Chairman of the Student Assembly Christopher Cole said that a heated discussion wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
“A little bit of tension sometimes comes with good discussion,” Cole said. “Talking about transferring responsibility will sometimes cause that, but it’ll be worked out.”
Student Trustee Justin Sadzewicz moved for a recognition of his voting rights within Student Assembly.
“It is just my opinion that I could benefit the board as the oldest trustee in Assembly,” Sadzewicz said. “It is not in the by-laws that I can’t vote."
The recognition was approved by the Assembly. A ratification for the title change of Campus Crusade for Christ to Christian Impact was also approved at the meeting. The Spanish Club was on the agenda for an approval of funds for a trip to Boston, but received the funds from another source prior to the meeting.
During his report, Striffolino talked to the Assembly about the off campus incident involving the arrest of Paul Paltrineri, manager of the Dining Commons, last week. Striffolino said that Dining Services is working to make a smooth transition.
“I met with the Sedexo staff and we put in place a temporary manager,” Striffolino said. “We want to let you know that a lot of people at the DC have been filling in for Paul and we hope you have not noticed a change in quality or services."
