Some upperclassmen to lose housing in fall

A record-high 1,778 students submitted housing deposits for fall 2008, compared to the average 1,400 from recent years, according to Drake-Deese.
With this housing crunch, the college has decided to offer rooms to incoming freshmen and sophomores first, with the remainder of rooms going to juniors and seniors until the beds run out. The students who do not receive a room will be placed on a waitlist, one that most students are unaware of.
"I heard about a waitlist but I'm not on it and no one I know is on it," said junior Rosalie Garlow, who plans to live on campus next year.
Like other female juniors and seniors, Garlow will find out her fate on the housing selection day, April 18. Men pick April 17.
"They [juniors and seniors] will go to the housing selection process and at some point we're going to run out of housing, and that's how they're going to know," said Drake-Deese.
Some students aren't pleased.
"I think its kind of crap," said junior Patrick Guglielemo. "They built all the dorms and they know how many people can live inside of them. You can do the math. Kids aren't all just going to live off campus. They have the numbers; they should be able to accept that."
As a result, juniors and seniors who join with a sophomore might avoid the waitlist.
Sophomore Paige Husted is one of those students.
"My lottery number was 902 anyway, which is horrible. I have a roommate who is going to be a sophomore, so hopefully I'll have a better chance with her," said Husted.
Drake-Deese noted there is no other way to solve this problem, as incoming freshmen are guaranteed housing at KSC and a new residence hall cannot be built in one summer.
"If somebody is not going to be housed, we're going to take the older, more mature group who has been here. They've been around, they know people on campus and off campus, and they're going to be the ones who are probably going to have the most success in the community if they have to live off campus," said Drake-Deese.

This is an outrage. I am absolutely livid. We pay SO MUCH money to go here (us out-of-staters) and we should be GUARANTEED housing every year. This is so ridiculous and I honestly think that we as students need to stand up and do something about it. (Continued…)

I just wanted to point out a couple of important inaccuracies in the article.
1. Juniors and seniors cannot avoid the waitlist by living with sophomores. (Continued…)

I am a senior who is presently living off campus, but in all the years I've been at KSC, I've always felt that upper classmen should be given first option to campus housing if they choose. (Continued…)

I am not writing to argue KSC's housing policy. Instead I would rather like to respond to Kent Drake Deese's above comments.
This years housing situation is a problem for everyone and for Deese to attack the integrity of the students at Keene State (". (Continued…)

I call for the immediate resignation of Kent Drake-Deese for these faults:
1) The student body was not made aware of this issue until after a housing deposit was due
2) He has a lack of care for the student population as his "this is how it is" attitude is somewhat apparent in this ordeal. (Continued…)
