Do not get me wrong when reading this article. I like that movies are being made based off of comic books. I actually think these movies are good for the industry. They help expose a lot of comic books that the general public has never heard of. But I also think the market is being oversaturated with these movies.
It is like how Barry White said, "Too much of one thing is no good for you baby." Those are words that I live by.
If there is one trend that I think will hurt the comic book industry, it is the over-saturation of cinematic renditions of comic books. It seems like within this decade that some movies are being green lit just because they are based off of comic books. That is never good practice, no matter what business you are in.
Okay, I'll admit that I thought "Hellboy" and "300" were going to be bad when I first saw the previews. I was totally wrong about those movies and they totally took me by surprise and I am glad I was proven wrong.
"Ghost Rider" was not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it could have been better.
But for every "Hellboy" and "300," there are some very notable flops. My prime example would have to be 2004's abomination "Catwoman" starring the lovely Halle Berry.
When I saw the previews of this movie the only thought that was in my head was "this is going to absolutely end all comic book movies!" I must say "Catwoman" is not only one of the worst comic-book-based movies ever; it is also one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The only thing this movie had in common with the comic book character was the name.
Another reason why I think the over abundance of comic book movies needs to end is because there are not that many comic books that can be made into good movies. Characters like Superman, Daredevil and Batman are characters that have good stories that can be made into entertaining movies.
I honestly do not think they can make a good Silver Surfer movie or an interesting Metal Men movie.
Back in 1986, Universal Studios made a movie out of the obscure Marvel Comics mallard Howard the Duck. This was one of the worst movies of all time. This movie was so bad that the president of Universal Studios resigned after "Howard the Duck" was released.
I feel that the comic book movie trend needs to end because overexposure does nothing but hurt people.
A recent example of overexposure is the prime time game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" When the Regis Philbin hosted show became insanely popular, it aired four times a week getting 30 million viewers. But only two years later the ratings dropped and it got cancelled because people got bored of the show.
I predict that the comic book movie adaptations trend will reach its end due to public boredom.
At first it seemed cool they were making movies based off of not-so-popular comic books like "Hellblazer" (that would be 2005's "Constantine" for those not hip to comics). But do we really need an Ant Man movie? And if they even try to make another Howard the Duck movie, someone is going to hear from me.
I'm not saying that movie studios should totally stop making movies based off comic books all together. All I am saying is that Hollywood needs to cool it with the assault of comic book movies we have been having lately. Giving people too much of one thing only makes people less excited about it. After all, we don't want another "Catwoman" on our hands.
